In preparation for th ABA Standards Review Committee meeting on January 14, 2012, in Washington, DC, SALT submitted two letters to Chair Jeffrey Lewis. First, SALT reiterated its position, long held, that raising the institutional bar pass rate has an adverse impact on those law schools that want to admit students of color and other non-traditional students. There are rumblings once again to raise the institutional bar pass rate, with no additional facts presented to justify such a move. Aspects of chapter 2 of the Standards for Governing Law Schools are also under review. Chapter 2 involves the governance of a law school, the relationship between the dean and faculty, and the relationship between the law school and the university, if it is part of a larger institution of higher learning. These most critical standards would significantly change these relationships, and would leave deans at university-based law schools with far less leverage with the university and its governing board to manage their own tuition revenues and budgets.
