SALT at the AALS Annual Meeting in New Orleans!

Each year when colleagues gather for the annual meeting of the AALS, SALT hosts its Cover Workshop and Annual Dinner along with a series of meetings giving SALT members a chance to meet and confer. Download a copy of SALT at the AALS.

Currently the SALT Annual Dinner is sold-out!   In addition to these events, SALT is adding two more: A Day of Service and a sneak preview of Abby Ginzberg’s new documentary Cruz Reynoso: Sowing the Seeds of Justice, profiling one of SALT’s founding members, the 1993 SALT Great Teacher award, and former justice of the California Supreme Court, Cruz Reynoso.

Here’s a preview of SALT at the AALS:

A Day of Service:

On Thursday, January 7, SALT and the Poverty Law Teachers are co-sponsoring a Day of Service in New Orleans.  The day begins at 9:00 am with volunteer service coordinated by the Lower Ninth Ward Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development, the New Orleans Group of the Sierra Club, and other local organizations.  Immediately following will be a lunchtime session during which local providers and advocates will educate law school participants about needs in the Gulf Coast region and work with us to devise creative responses to the continuing calls for law-related assistance.  Buses will be provided to transport participants to and from the Annual Meeting Hotel site.

Participation in the event is limited.  Advance registration is required.  The cost for the event is $60.00, which covers bus transportation to and from the hotel, lunch, and a contribution to the host service providers.  Click here to register for A Day of Service.

Robert Cover Workshop:

On Friday, January 8, at 8:00 pm-10:00 pm at Hilton New Orleans Riverside, Port & Starboard, immediately following the AALS Gala, SALT will be presenting the anniversary session of the Cover Workshop: "In the Public Interest: Exploring the Legacy of Robert Cover as Professor, Activist, and Scholar."  Individual scholars, confirmed so far--Rodger Citron (Touro), Christine Cimini (Denver), and Melissa Hart (Colorado)--will trace their own scholarship, teaching, and service to Robert Cover’s writings with introductions by Avi Soifer, Dean, University of Hawai’i School of Law, who knew Professor Cover as a friend, mentor, and colleague.   This event is free; no registration is required.  For more information, watch the calendar of events. Cruz Reynoso: Sowing the Seeds of Justice:

On Saturday, January 9, at 5:00 pm-7:00 pm at the Hotel Monteleone, SALT, along with UC Davis School of Law, will be offering a sneak preview of  "Cruz Reynoso: Sowing the Seeds of Justice," a new documentary about Cruz Reynoso, a founding SALT board member, a former justice of the California Supreme Court, the 1993 recipient of the SALT Great Teacher Award, and currently a professor at UC Davis School of Law. Dean Kevin R. Johnson, of UC Davis, will be co-hosting this sneak preview and reception, and will be moderating a panel with filmmaker Abby Ginzberg and Justice Reynoso.  Thank you, Dean Johnson, for your generous sponsorship of this event, which will include a beverage service.

The sneak preview and reception are free of charge.  Space is limited so to guarantee yourself a seat, send an email to rsvp@saltlaw.org.  Tickets are required for the dinner that follows!

SALT Annual Dinner:

This year SALT will be honoring Professor Francisco Valdés, University of Miami School of Law, as SALT’s Great Teacher.  Click here to read a fuller biography of Frank’s contributions to teaching.

Currently, the SALT Annual Dinner is sold out.  Check with your dean to see if there is room for you at a law school table.

Prepare yourselves for the tastes and sounds of New Orleans.

The Hotel Monteleone is the setting for this year’s Annual Dinner.  It’s been said that the French Quarter begins in the lobby of the Hotel Monteleone.  This historic landmark is a member of Historic Hotels of America.  The hotel is elegant and the food is authentic New Orleans cuisine.  To complete our immersion into New Orleans, a jazz concert will be offered during dinner presented by the Victor Atkins Trio, featuring Victor "Red" Atkins, member of the faculty at New Orleans University, Neal Caine (who plays for Harry Connick, Jr.), and Geoff Clapp (who play drums for Johnaye Kendrick of the Monk Institute and also teaches at Tulane).

SALT thanks the University of Miami School of Law for its generous support as our dinner sponsor!
