Let’s start with the venue: Delancey Street Foundation.
Since 1971 Delancey Street has been working with men and women recovering from substance abuse or released from incarceration in a residential facility in San Francisco that offers job training and life skills. In addition to its restaurant and moving company, Delancey Street operates a magnificent catering hall and a cocktail lounge with a view of the Bay Bridge. We thank Rebecca Jackson, Catering Manager, and the residents/staff at Delancey Street for their professionalism and service.
SALT honored the Prison Law Office with the M. Shanara Gilbert Human Rights Award. As guests were entering the dining room, the images of photographer Robert Gumpert were displayed, riveting portraits of incarcerated men and women. He is the creator of Take a Picture Tell a Story which brings a sense of dignity and humanity to those who have been caught up in the criminal justice system. We thank Robert for his generous contribution to the SALT program.
Former San Quentin Warden Jeanne Woodford introduced the Prison Law Office. How’s that for respect for one’s adversary! And Don Specter, executive director, of the Prison Law Office informed us about the state of prisons in California, which is reeling from the impact of “Three Strikes.”
Former SALT co-president Paula Johnson introduced 2011 SALT Great Teacher Phoebe Haddon, Dean of University of Maryland School of Law with humor, delicacy, and respect. Former SALT co-president Stephanie Wildman and Dean Joan Howarth added to the introduction, and then Phoebe accepted the honor with the poise, grace, intelligence, commitment, and passion that makes her a great teacher.
Thanks to everyone who attended and joined in our celebration. Remember to buy your tickets early next year!
