University of Pittsburgh School of Law Seeks Dean

December 31, 2011 Deadline for Applications

Dean, School of Law
UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH

The University of Pittsburgh School of Law (Pitt Law), one of the nation’s leaders in legal education, is seeking a new Dean to succeed Mary Crossley, who will be returning to teaching and research after seven years of successful leadership.  Pitt Law features a broad and varied curriculum, an internationally accomplished faculty, and a talented and diverse student body hailing from all over the globe.  The school is located on the main campus of the University of Pittsburgh, one of the nation’s top public research universities, just minutes from state and federal courts, major corporate headquarters, and hundreds of law firms located in downtown Pittsburgh, a city which has enjoyed a remarkable transformation into a world-class center of education, medicine and developing technology.

The next Dean will be presented with the opportunity to serve among the senior leaders of a national research university that has made enormous gains over the past decade.  The Dean is responsible for the quality of academic programs in teaching, research, and service; strategic planning; budgeting; fundraising; faculty and staff development; and alumni relations and outreach.  The position requires an individual who can lead effectively and manage a large and complex school in a multi-campus research university.  Prior leadership experience with responsibility for strategic management of personnel, programs, and resources is preferred, along with an ability to inspire students to expand their knowledge and understanding of multicultural, global perspectives.

Qualified candidates must have a J.D. and the ability to satisfy the requirements of a tenured law professor.  Ideally, candidates should present:  the ability to lead an accomplished faculty toward further excellence; a keen appreciation for innovative and interdisciplinary legal scholarship; and a commitment to the law school’s central role in a public research university that fosters civic engagement and policy debate.

A full leadership profile is available upon request.  Applications, nominations, or confidential inquiries concerning this search may be sent by email to PittLaw@wittkieffer.com or directed to John K. Thornburgh at (412) 209-2666 or Elizabeth K. Bohan at (630) 575-6161.  In order to receive full consideration, applications must be received by December 31, 2011.  Review of candidate materials will begin in early 2012 with the expectation that the new Dean will start effective July 1, 2012.

The University of Pittsburgh is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
