Integration Debate Is Focus of Housing Conference Experts from across the country will gather at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago Sept. 5 and 6 for an examination of “The Integration Debate: Competing Futures for American Cities.”
Conference speakers will look at the socioeconomic and demographic shifts, as well as mobility factors that are impacting the housing market; whether integration is still a goal in the United States; and how the Fair Housing Act, passed by Congress 40 years ago, has benefited the nation.
This program, at The John Marshall Law School, 315 S. Plymouth Ct., is co-sponsored by the law school’s Fair Housing Legal Support Center, the National Fair Housing Alliance and the Poverty & Race Research Action Council.
Overall topics covered during the two days are “The Changing Demography of Metropolitan America,” “Shifting Legal Mandates,” “Economic Consequences of Segregation,” “Race, Politics and Justice” and “Housing Policy: Opportunities and Challenges.”
Shanna Smith and Cathy Cloud of the National Fair Housing Alliance in Washington, D.C., keynote speakers on Friday, Sept. 5, will address “Market Barriers to Integration: Discrimination in Housing, Mortgage Lending and Homeowners Insurance.”
Professor Roger Wilkins of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., will deliver the keynote address on Saturday, Sept. 6.
