SALT Hires First Norman Dorsen Fellow

SALT is proud to announce that it has hired its first Norman Dorsen Fellow,  Camilla McFarlane, a second-year student at The Catholic University Columbus School of Law.

The fellowship was created by acclaimed New York University law professor, Norman Dorsen, who founded SALT in 1973.  The Dorsen Fellowship trains and nurtures law students by engaging them in the work of activist scholars within the legal academy.  SALT members work to promote public interest law and positive social change in furtherance of equality and social justice.

Ms. McFarlane exemplifies Professor Dorsen’s vision that the study of law should combine a commitment to justice, diversity, and academic excellence.  “I’m extremely humbled by this fellowship,” said Ms. McFarlane.  “I represent the many students in the legal community who are passionate about social justice and pressing societal needs.”

Ms. McFarlane is a student in the Catholic University of America General Practice Clinic, a member of CUA Law and Public Policy program, a staff member of CommLaw Conspectus: Journal of Communications Law and Policy, and Community Service Coordinator for BLSA (Black Law Student Association).

Ms. McFarlane will work closely with CUA Law Professor Margaret Martin Barry.   Professor Barry is co-president of SALT and a member of the Dorsen Fund Board.  “I am very excited about hiring Ms. McFarlane,” said Professor Barry.  “In learning from Camilla about her background and goals, I found that she fully met the Dorsen Fund’s criteria for mentoring a student who has already exhibited passion and intelligence.  Professor Dorsen and the Dorsen Fund President, NYU Law Professor Holly Maguigan, were equally impressed and readily approved the hire.”
