SALT proudly announces that Professor Justin Hansford is the 2015 Junior Faculty Teaching Award Winner.  The award recognizes an outstanding recent entrant into legal education who demonstrates a commitment to justice, equality and academic excellence. It is designed to honor an emerging teacher and support an outstanding individual new to the legal academy. This award also recognizes law teachers who exemplify SALT values through SALT membership and participation in SALT activities. The award will be given at the SALT Members Meeting at the Doubletree Hotel Anaheim, Orange County, Oct. 2, 6 p.m.

Professor Hansford’s commitment to advocacy work with African-American men both in the classroom and community makes him an important participant in the struggle for justice.

Specifically, Justin has been a tireless advocate for the Michael Brown family in Ferguson, Missouri. He co-authored the Ferguson to Geneva Shadow report and accompanied the family the Geneva to testify at the United Nations, was arrested as a legal observer, and testified before the US Civil Rights Commission. These experiences give him powerful perspectives in his classes at SLU, where he teaches Civil Rights, Legal Ethics and Critical Race Theory.  With regard to his work with SALT, Professor Hansford helped plan last year’s SALT/LatCrit Junior Faculty Development Workshop, was a featured speaker in the 2015 Cover Workshop on Abusive Policing and Communities of Color, and helped coordinate the SALT Co-Sponsorship this summer of the Law for Black Lives Conference in Harlem.

We congratulate Professor Hansford and his institution St. Louis University School of Law!
