A post from the program under way today by Professor Michael Olivas here in Houston, Texas.

SALT President-Elect Olympia Duhart introduced this morning with Professor Olivas followed by the State of the Profession and Pipeline Programs with Professor Olivas and Kent Lollis from LSAC. We moved through panels on Post Fisher Fallout from Professors and members of SALT SpearIT (SALT Board) and Meera Deo (member, scholar, and professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, San Diego), and admissions information for pre law advisors and admissions personnel at Houston Law Center and the University of Texas School of Law. We are currently listening to Chris Chapman, President and CEO of the Access Group, discussing the state of financial aid for law school and the massive amount of debt that students are taking on to pay for school. There is now more collective student debt in the United States than extended lines of credit for home mortgages.

This afternoon we will hear from local professors of law working with the Dream Act and comprehensive immigration reform and sessions for prospective law students on practicing for the LSAT and a sample law class. An enormous thanks to the University of Houston Law Center and the Leadership Council for Legal Diversity, Michael Olivas, and presenters who made this day possible. We hope that you might join us for future programs. For information, see the calendar on the SALT website.
